Nigeria Senate's Set To Pass A Bill To Build A Giant Sport University

As part of efforts to fully develop the sports sector in Nigeria, the Senate says it has initiated a bill for the establishment of a Sports University in the country. Senate President, Senator Abubakar Saraki revealed this yesterday in Abuja when he played host to the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Sports Writers Association (SWAN) who paid him a courtesy visit in his office. “Senates Have No Power To Question Aregbesola Over Bailout Fund” – Osun Lawmakers

The Osun State House of Assembly has affirmed that the Senate has no constitutional power to question how Governor Rauf Aregbesola spent the bailout given to the state government by the Federal Government. The state lawmakers made the declaration in a statement made available to newsmen by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, after the plenary of the assembly. The lawmakers said this following a matter of urgent public importance raised by Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Mr. Kamil Oyedele, on the propriety of the Senate’s plan to probe the bailout. Oyedele said by the provision of Section 128 of the Constitution, the state assembly was the arm of government empowered to carry out such probe, saying, the senate was only attempting to usurp the power of the state parliament. Journalist And Blogger, Jailed Three Months For His Tweets.

A Bahraini court has jailed a journalist for three months over a tweet deemed insulting to religion, Reporters Without Borders said Wednesday. According to AFP, the journalist identified as Faisal Hayyat, who is also a blogger was convicted on Tuesday for insulting a “religious symbol and group,” the watchdog said. The report further revealed that the blogger has been in detention since October 9, the last time he tweeted saying that he had been summoned by police for investigation. Although the content of the tweet is not clear, it was however discovered that his detention might have been related to some tweets he posted on October 8, denouncing Muawiyah, the first caliph of the 7th-century Umayyad Caliphate, who is despised by Shiite Muslims for a conflict with their revered Imam Ali. Ebonyi Governor Presents N127.2 Billion Budget For 2017.

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State on Wednesday presented to the state House of Assembly a budget proposal of N127.2 billion for 2017. The Appropriation Bill, tagged Budget of Inclusive Growth and Poverty Reduction in Economic Recession, sets aside N87.1 billion for capital expenditure representing and N40. 171 billion for recurrent spending. The budget for 2016 was N101.1 billion. The economic sector got N57.1 billion as the largest allocation from the capital spending. The governor said the money would go into providing roads, water, electricity, agriculture, education, commerce and industries. The social sector got N14.1 billion, while administration received N9.9 billion. The governor said the state would borrow N40 billion to accelerate growth. He said the money would enable the government complete ongoing road, agricultural, and infrastructural projects. Reduction Of Workers’ Salary Will Not End Recession – Nigeria Labour Congress

The Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to put in place coherent economic blueprint to tackle recession in the 2017 budget. The NLC Chief Economist, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, said that the preparation of the 2017 budget should not be delayed like that of 2016. Office Of Lagos Chief Judge ‘Justice Funmilayo Atilade’ Was Gutted By Fire.

Judicial activities were temporarily paralysed on Wednesday at the premises of the Lagos State High Court, Igbosere, as fire gutted the chambers of the state Chief Judge (CJ), Justice Funmilayo Atilade. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident occurred at about 8.30 a.m. following a spark from one of the air-conditioning units in the CJ’s chambers, which is on the top floor of the building. An unconfirmed report said that the fire started when one of the cleaners switched on a faulty air-conditioner and left the room. But, another witness (name withheld), said that the fire was noticed by a security woman popularly called Alhaja, who immediately raised an alarm. The security woman was said to have been taken to the hospital as a result of the smoke she allegedly inhaled, before the arrival of the firefighters. Former Minister of Works, Adesye Ogunlewe, has resigned his appointment as the pro-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB. His resignation comes days after himself, the Vice Chancellor and Bursar of the University were arraigned before the Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta on 18 counts, bordering on conspiracy, stealing, obtaining money by false pretences and abuse of office. Part of his resignation letter reads; "I have decided to resign my appointment as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta with immediate effect. This is due to personal reasons. I sincerely thank the Federal Government for giving me the opportunity to serve. The Federal Government should please accept the assurances of my best regards”.

76-year-old Nigerian woman & her daughter arrested in Uganda with Shs3bn worth of heroine

Police at Entebbe International airport, Uganda, arrested two Nigerian women headed for Lagos, Nigeria, for allegedly being in possession of 10kgs of heroine estimated at Shs3 billion. According to reports, the two women who are family members, arrived in the country on November 20, 2016. Ms Aniugo Agnes Egonna, 76 and her daughter Ms Aniugo Gloria Vera, 35, were intercepted on November 25 at the airport. While Ms Vera had 5kgs of heroin worth Shs1.565 billion, her mother also had 5kgs worth Shs1.565 billion that had been concealed in their luggage. In their statement to police, Aniugo Agnes and her daughter claimed to have been in Uganda for the introduction ceremony of Agnes’ son who is engaged to a Ugandan girl. This has however not been verified and the police claims not to be sure whether their son who supposedly left Uganda before the two,  also trafficked drugs. Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, today hinted he might choose his successor from another political party besides his party, PDP. Fayose gave the hint when he spoke with members of the Suppliers’ Association of Nigeria in the state today November 30th. According to him, the division within PDP led to the party losing Ondo state to APC in last Saturday's governorship election “I don’t know the platform I will use for the 2018 election yet and at the appropriate time, I will tell you. Minister Of Communication, Adebayo Shittu Denied Knowing About Data Price Hike By Telecoms Companies

The Minister of Communication,  Adebayo Shittu  has denied knowledge of an increase in data tariff by the Nigerian Communications Commission. The NCC raised the data floor price for telcos on Tuesday effective December 1, forcing mobile telecommunications operators to drive up the price of data. Speaking on the Fact File on Raypower FM on Wednesday, November 30, Shittu said he was not involved in the decision as the news came to him as a surprise. “There are reasons for what they have done, the reasons I’m sure will not be political, the reason will be more of logistics and all of that and as you have requested me to do I will do that. “But I want to say that I was not privy to it, I was not party to it, government never gave any such instruction and the government as the representative of the people never have done that – that the voice of Nigerians must be muscled,”  he said. He however assured that Nigerians won’t be held hostage by the telecoms mafia.
