Police arrest 7 persons over illegal sale and hawking of mint Naira notes in Anambra, recovers N4,304,550. 00

Seven persons have been arrested over illegal sale and hawking of mint Naira notes at Ogbogwu and Building materials Market in Onitsha, Anambra State. Briefing newsmen at the command headquarters in Thursday, the Commisssioner of Police,  CP. Garba Baba Umar, disclosed that on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at about 1pm, the Command in collaboration with the Department of State Security (DSS)  and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) carried a sting Operation, aimed at forestalling illicit sale of Naira Notes(Mint). The clamp-down on the ?suspects is hinged on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act section 20 and 21 thereof; Section 20 sub section 4, makes it an offence punishable by a term of imprisonment not less than five (5) years for any person to falsify, make or counterfeit any Bank Notes or coin issued by the Bank. MAPOLY students arrested by Police over protests

20 At least 20 students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, were arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command for taking part in the on-going protest tagged ‘BlackWeek’.   The students were arrested for allegedly vandalising government and personal properties in Panseke, Oluwo and Iyana Oloke areas of Abeokuta.  The students made bonfires close to the pedestrian bridge currently under construction in Panseke while some construction equipment on the bridge were set ablaze. The protest which started on Monday, according to the students, was against continued hostility between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, MAPOLY chapter. PDP members in the House of Representatives this afternoon staged a walkout from the chambers after a former member of their party, Nnanna Igbokwe defected to PDP.The grieviance of th PDP members is that the speaker of the house, Yakubu Dogara, failed to declare Igbokwe's sit vacant after his defection. Ahead of 2019, Senator Ekweremadu calls for 6-year single tenure for president, governors, others

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu  has advocated a six-year single tenure for president, governors, National Assembly and state assembly members “to stop the problem caused by the quest for second term.” Ekweremadu made the call in Nsukka on Friday at the 3rd Adada Lecture organised by Association of Nsukka Professors with the theme “Restructuring and the Nigeria Youth.” He said countries in South America used single tenure to stabilise their democracy, adding that one of such countries, Mexico, was still practicing single term. Police in Toronto are investigating the circumstances behind the deaths of billionaire founder of Canadian pharmaceutical firm Apotex, Barry Sherman, 75,  and his wife, Honey, who were found dead in their Toronto mansion on Friday. According to reports, Police found the couple dead after they responded to a medical call at their home at 50 Old Colony Rd. in the Bayview Avenue and Highway 401 area around 11:45 a.m “The circumstances of their death appear suspicious and we are treating it that way,” said police officer David Hopkinson. Governor Rochas Okorocha presents N190bn Budget for 2018 to State Assembly

Yesterday, the Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha presented the sum of N190billion budget proposal for the 2018 fiscal year. The governor presented the appropriation bill at the hallowed chambers of the Imo State House of Assembly on Wednesday in Owerri, the state capital. He said in the proposal, titled ‘Budget of Consolidation and Continuity III’, capital expenditure stands at N132billion representing 69.7% while recurrent expenditure stands at N57billion representing 30.3% of the total budget. Governor Okorocha informed the lawmakers that the budget is higher than that of 2017 with about N59billion. According to him, the 2018 budget will provide a realistic platform for the attainment of his administration’s development goals. Osun House of Assembly issues warrant of arrest for Bola Ige’s son, Muyiwa

The Osun State House of Assembly has issued a warrant of arrest on the immediate past Commissioner for Lands, Physical Planning and Urban Development in the state, Muyiwa Ige. Muyiwa is the son of the former Minister of Justice, Bola Ige, who was murdered in December 2001. The warrant of arrest was issued following Ige's refusal to appear before the house to answer some questions regarding a controversial piece of land that was allocated at the Illobu area while he was in office. Ige's warrant of arrest was announced on the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation yesterday, Wednesday, December 13th. Court unfreezes 16 accounts belonging to former first lady, Patience Jonathan

The Federal High Court in Abuja has reversed its order made on May 30, to freeze 16 accounts belonging to Patience Jonathan, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan. At the hearing of an application filed by the former first lady today December 5th, the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, withdrew the order on the grounds that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which secured the freezing order, failed to conduct a proper investigation into the case. Speaking after the ruling, counsel to Mrs Jonathan, Mike Ozekhome, said the court had ordered the EFCC to conduct its investigation within 90 days of freezing the accounts in May. However, the antigraft agency failed to carry out the said investigation within the given period.
