Shehu Shagari’s life inspires me and others – Saraki

President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, on Sunday, extolled the “noble virtues” of Alhaji Shehu Shagari as the former President celebrates his 92nd birthday anniversary.

Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, in Abuja, lauded the contributions of the nonagenarian to the sustenance of democracy, national peace and development.

He said, “I am delighted to join millions of Nigerians to wish you a happy birthday as you clock 92, while looking forward to partaking in many more joyous moments to celebrate your eventful and most successful life. I am happy that you have not relented in making those salient contributions that have kept our ship of the state sailing smoothly and surely.

“Permit me to say that your presence continue to inspire and spur myself and many Nigerians to give our best in all our undertakings. It is my prayers that Allah will continue to prolong your life and endue you with excellent health.”

Saraki stated that the political class would continue to crave the wise counsel of Shagari on ways to overcome the current economic challenges and his prayers to help move the country.

50 die in Akwa Ibom church collapse – Witnesses

Not less than 50 people died when a church collapsed in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom, earlier today, eyewitnesses have said. Though the police are yet to give a figure to the fatalities in the Reigners Bible Church collapse,eyewitnesses said they counted not less than 50 bodies. According to the News Agency of Nigeria the church’s iron rafters caved in during the consecration service of the Founder of the church, Apostle Akan Weeks, as a bishop. A witness said that the building collapsed 30 minutes after the Governor Emmanuel Udom, a special guest of honour at the event, arrived at the church. Another witness, Miss Uduak Effiong, said that a female victim’s bowel was ripped open by the tragedy. Effiong, who is a communication arts student of the University of Uyo, said that she lost three friends to the incident.
